My work originates with a desire to pose fundamental questions about how and where human artifice affects our understanding of and interaction with the environment. Humankind purports to appreciate nature but in reality we regard nature as scenery/prop, something to be admired as monumental, sacred and sublime or exploited for leisure, recreation or comfort. As a consequence we frame nature allowing us to enjoy it while firmly demonstrating our separateness and supremacy.
Every cloud has a silver lining is an exploration of how water in its gaseous forms is intentionally manipulated, while tip of the iceberg is a reflection on how water in its solid state is unintentionally altered by humans. Creating compelling sculpture that addresses these topics is meant to challenge the viewer to evaluate the consequences of their tendency to project their concepts, beliefs and predicaments onto the environment.
I employ humor in the form of aphorisms, satire and an aesthetic of play in order to disarm while the more solemn implications of the work infiltrate one’s consciouness. By creating a tension between what is fun and what is grave through the utilization of the iconography of kitsch I hope to subvert constructed meanings and elicit a critique of humankind’s system of values. |
