Combining an interest in urban culture along with an art historical perspective, I navigate toward making work that in one form or another exists with-in these two parallel worlds. I incorporate the use of high and low cultural iconography along with art historical references, sampled from such sources as minimalism, arte povera, cubism, abstract expressionism, impressionism, and conceptual art. In the process creating a working space or hybrid between both cultural identities in which a sample or multiple samples could be built upon with new content. The specific subject matter of my work explores various aspects of inner city life, from poverty and violence, to its rich cultural history of forgotten and obscure places, names, and people. Through my work I try to find a balance between all these elements while addressing a broader spectrum of formal issues that engage contemporary art discourse. Creating a vocabulary that speaks of and reflects the world we currently live in today.
